There are a few things that you need to consider when looking at processors and when thinking about what processor would be best for your system. The things you need to look at are socket type. If you dont know what socket types are, they are the pins located on the bottom of the processor, the number and pattern are what determines the type. Bus speed, or front side bus, this is the rate at which information moves from the processor to the motherboard, this will affect the overall speed of your computer. Other things to be considered are how to purchase your processor and if its compatible with your motherboard or the motherboard you are looking at purchasing.
Socket types and motherboards go hand in hand. The socket type has a hand in determining the motherboard and what socket types a motherboard can accept obviously has a say in what type of processor you can look at.
